In late October, we headed out for Rocky Mountain National Park to take Loch Vale trail to Loch Lake. Loch Vale promises spectacular views of the lake within the Rocky Mountain vale as well as breathtaking waterfalls and wildlife along the way! The combination of a sunny day and this trail did not disappoint.

The trail is long, so we made sure to pace ourselves and drink lots of water. We came to a waterfall where other hikers were perched on the boulders and decided to take our first break! Replenishing and relaxing in the sun with the sound of water roaring over the side of the cliff reassured us this trail was just what we needed after a long week.

For the most part, the trail was exposed. The sun kept us warm, but the wind gusts were chilling. The last mile or so was packed ice. We didn’t have spikes and were sliding around every so often, but it was manageable! At this point we could feel the elevation change affecting our breathing.

When we finally got to the Loch Lake, we were ready to sit and enjoy the views for a while! We had each packed a lunch, which was much needed at this point. The wind was blowing across the partially frozen lake, creating a peaceful break.

The trail is out and back allowing us time for great conversation! It was a little slippery on the way down, but we quickly got past the ice and the rest of the trail was easy.
